About this Region
Often characterized by Texas Ranching, southern blues, and this nation's best Barbecue (also known as BBQ), one may be surprised by the diverse environment and culture of our Southern United States. The "dixie" combines a unique landscape of border territory fused with lush river bends. The South, home of the cotton gin and the birthplace of agro-industry, faces complex environmental challenges surrounding irrigation practices, sustainable farming, environmental justice, and cultural awareness.
Located in Southern Texas, Big Bend National Park is a geologists dream. The thousands of fossils that line the park's limestone caverns tell the history of ancient civilizations, prehistoric mammals, and traditional plant species. By studying the cultural resources and the ancient ruins found within, scientists have have been able to learn from the arid lifestyles of dozens of Native American tribes. The fossil record dates back to the Paleo-Indian period 10,500 years ago!
While YESC has yet to take root in the South, YMCA's are certainly ready to start a program and help work on environmental issues near you. T. Boone. Pickens made the leap - so can you!
